Generation Kingspan™ 2014 Official Contest Rules

Introduction

The GenK Student Design Competition offers the opportunity to compete in an Insulated Metal Panel (IMP) design competition with a chance to win top awards. Students investigate how insulated roof and wall panels can be integrated into the design of a mixed-use building. Students compete, communities participate, and everyone learns more about sustainable design with Kingspan Insulated Panels.

Challenge

Generation Kingspan (GenK) student participants will design a multi-use complex with commercial, residential, and community/recreation space. The project site is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Entrants are challenged to propose high performance building envelope solutions that rely on the performance characteristics of a variety of insulated metal panel types. Entrants will compete for prizes by submitting their best, most innovative design for this facility and should take into account the following:

  1. Location (urban, downtown historical)
  2. Climate (sun, wind, light, and water)
  3. Culture (patterns of interaction)

Through plans, sections, elevations, and rendered perspectives, participants should clearly demonstrate the integration of insulated metal panels within the overall mixed-use complex. The building should be designed from a life-cycle (LCA) perspective, using ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, GreenGlobes, and the Living Building Challenge for guidance.

Participants may receive prizes based on their entry in one of two ways. The first will be through a judged competition in which industry professionals will evaluate and rank the entries. The second will be through influence from project clusters on KINetic combined with online voting on the Generation Kingspan contest website from badges earned in the areas of:

  • Creativity/Innovation
  • Proper Use of Panel
  • Function

Material Overview

Insulated Metal Panels (IMP) are characterized by being a lightweight, single component system that maximizes speed of build, allows design flexibility and reduces environmental impact.

Emphasis should be placed on innovation and creativity using KarrierPanel Barrier Wall Systems and KingZip Roofing Panels. IMPs offer a number of advantages in building design including: high performance sustainable building envelope, design flexibility, aesthetics, single component and speed of build. Participants should consider the following type of support structures: vertical metal stud frame, conventional steel frame, pre-engineered metal frame, masonry, and concrete.

Submission Guidelines

Students must complete their entry at www.GenerationKingspan.com and may list a faculty sponsor. Each entry must be uploaded to the Generation Kingspan contest website and entries can be modified until the initial submission deadline.

  • 4 Boards (24”x36”) highlighting basic plans, elevations, perspectives, and sections saved in one PDF
  • Design essay with a 1,000 word maximum description of the design, the components, and importance of sustainable design
  • 1 Project profile picture

One concept / entry permitted per contestant.

The building must be designed using KarrierPanel Barrier Wall Systems and KingZip Roofing Panels. Submissions must clearly demonstrate:

  • Appropriate and creative use of KarrierPanel Barrier Wall Systems and KingZip Roofing Panels utilizing Insulated Metal Panels (IMP) as major part of a high performance building envelope;
  • Integration of KarrierPanel Barrier Wall Systems and KingZip Roofing Panels utilizing IMP within the overall design of the mixed-use building;
  • Responsiveness to typical architectural considerations such as site, context, function, circulation, structure, building services, construction, and climatic and environmental issues;
  • Effectiveness of the submitted design drawings and design essay.

The building should be designed from a life-cycle (LCA) perspective using ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, GreenGlobes, and Living Building Challenge as guidance.

Program

The program should guide the development of a rich sequence of spaces and uses. The diversified program proposes several occupancies that promote a building envelope composition that respond to site orientation, environmental criteria, and cultural adjacencies in order to elicit a high performance building envelope solution. The building program includes 600,000 square feet with 1/3 for commercial space, 1/3 for residential space, and 1/3 for community/recreation space.

Evaluation Process

Juried Winners

A jury of industry leaders will evaluate all the submissions and decide upon the top three. In addressing specific issues of the design challenge, submissions must clearly demonstrate:

  • Appropriate and creative use of KarrierPanel Barrier Wall Systems and KingZip Roofing Panels utilizing IMP as a major part of a high performance building envelope
  • Integration of KarrierPanel Barrier Wall Systems and KingZip Roofing Panels within the overall design of the mixed-use building
  • Responsiveness to typical architectural considerations such as site, context, function, circulation, structure, building services, construction, and climatic and environmental issues
  • Effectiveness of the submitted design drawings and design essay

Social Winners

The top two social winners are determined based upon online voting. Voting is in totaled from two parts. First, social votes on the Generation Kingspan contest website from badges earned in the areas of:

  • Creativity/Innovation
  • Proper Use of Panel
  • Function

Second, influence from project clusters on KINetic. To have the ability to add influence from KINetic clusters to overall social votes, a KINetic cluster for the submitted GenK project must be created by the participant.

What is KINetic?

KINetic is an online collaborative platform for the architectural community. It combines the best features of popular social media websites into one application. KINetic makes technical documentation readily available within the platform. Resource material such as data sheets, load span and weight tables and installation guides can be accessed quickly with KINetic.

Designers have the ability to create clusters or projects. Within these clusters are spheres, or building blocks of ideas. The user can situate the spheres around the clusters. The spheres contain ideas, materials, drawings, technical information, questions and other project components. Capabilities exist to work with a project from initial concept to final construction.

Voting for Popular Winners

The top two social winners are determined based upon online voting and KINetic influence during December 5, 2014, 12:01 a.m. (EST) and December 19, 2014, 11:59 p.m. (EST).

For voting purposes, one badge equals one vote. All entrants begin the competition at zero votes. Every voter can give each entrant between one and three badges. (Any voter that attempts to assign more than the allowed number of badges per entry can result in all of their votes being disqualified.) During the voting period, voters can also remove any badge(s) they previously assigned to a submission.

If the participant creates a KINetic cluster for their GenK project entry, then the social influence of that cluster will be evaluated through activity within it and added to their overall social votes.

Entrants are prohibited from obtaining votes or influence by ‘Gain Vote’ sites, vote farming, email address or KINetic user fabricating, appeals for votes to win a contest, any voting/ KINetic influence gained by soliciting on behalf of a charity or other social cause or artificially inflating votes shall result in disqualification of submission.

Judged winners will not be eligible to win the online voting portion of the contest. In the event judged winners receive top voting in the online vote, the two contest participants with the next highest number of votes will be selected as winners of the online (social) competition.
